Summer means the bugs are out!
Who doesn’t hate when you’re outside enjoying a nice evening on your patio and then you get swarmed with mosquitoes, flies, gnats & ticks? You feel the little bites all over and then the inevitable itching begins! DIY Bug Repellent is a great solution for everyone. You control what you put in the bottle & what you’re spraying on your skin. Everything that is on your skin is absorbed into your body. Think about it! Do you know what is really in Off?
My solution became clear
For years my family has used the major brands for bug repellents. Off, Cutter & Repel just to name a few. But have you ever read the ingredients label? (Butane, fragrance, Deet, etc.) All dangerous to our skin and to inhale. Remember, everything we put on our bodies is absorbed into our skin and to our blood stream. Really go through the ingredient list and look up each item. It’s pretty scary what we are putting on ourselves and trusting that these big corporations have our best interest at heart. Have you ever accidentally gotten the spray on anything? It discolors it and can eat away at the fabric it touches. (I’ve got multiple personal experiences with camping equipment deteriorating from this!)
Here is my NON-TOXIC idea for bug repellent!
My idea was to create my own DIY Bug Repellent. The perfect blend for what my family needed. After reading many articles on Pinterest and researched online what essential oils repel bugs. I learned that so many do! Essential oils can be used to cover many things in our daily lives. I’ve crossed check blogs and other researchers to see what was working for them and then decided to start testing the theory!
This is my best recipes for DIY Bug Repellent. You’ll need a 4 ounce spray bottle. I normally suggest glass bottles, but since this will be used outside I chose plastic in the event it falls, it won’t break! And a few other simple ingredients you may already have at home!
Ingredients:
- 4 ounce spray bottle
- 2 ounces of witch hazel
- 2 ounces of distilled water
- 15 drops of lemongrass
- 15 drops of eucalyptus
- 20 drops of citronella
- 15 drops of lavender
Let me know if you try this & how it works for you!
The essential oil blend can fluctuate with different oils, but this blend is my favorite one. This is a summer must have for us! I live in South Louisiana. I’m pretty sure our state bird should have been a mosquito! So I needed something that worked! This has been tested and is Southerner approved!
